Ismay van der Steen works as a legal assistant at BMDW Advocaten. Ismay is a member of the Football Desk and specializes in equine law. Drawing on these two areas of expertise, she handles a wide range of national and international matters.
Ismay herself competed internationally at the highest level for many years. She combines this experience and the knowledge she gained from it with her legal expertise in equestrian law. She knows the equestrian sport from the inside out and understands the athletic, business, and financial interests of horse owners, professional riders, and equestrian entrepreneurs.
In the field of equestrian law, Ismay focuses, among other things, on the legal relationships between owners and riders, agreements regarding training and collaboration, the distribution of prize money and proceeds from sales, and disputes concerning the purchase and sale of horses. In addition, she handles liability issues and regulations within the equestrian sports.
Ismay earned her bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Amsterdam. She then completed master’s degrees in Private Law and Labor Law at Tilburg University. During her studies, she delved deeper into various topics in private law and labor law, with a particular interest in sports law.
In her master’s thesis, Ismay conducted research on the higher liability threshold that applies in sports and recreational settings and how it relates to liability in equestrian sports. Through this work, she further explored the relationship between private law and sports law.
