Ivo Batelaan joined BMDW Advocaten as a lawyer in September 2024. In February 2026, Ivo was sworn in as a lawyer by the court in Haarlem. Within the firm, he focuses primarily on employment law. He advises both employers and employees on a wide range of employment law issues, both within and outside the world of sports. In addition, he specializes in association law and sports disciplinary law across all sports. In this context, he represents parties in disciplinary proceedings, including before the disciplinary bodies of the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) and the Instituut Sportrechtspraak (ISR, Institute for Sports Law). He also provides legal assistance within the firm in international sports law proceedings, including before the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Ivo is also active as a disciplinary judge at the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB) and publishes academic articles in sports and labor law journals.
Ivo has a solid academic foundation, having completed two master's degrees at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam in the field of civil law, specializing in particular in labor law. During his studies, he gained practical experience by doing employment law internships at leading commercial law firms. Prior to joining BMDW, Ivo worked for the Federatie van Betaald Football Organisaties (FBO), the employers' organization for professional Football in the Netherlands. His work there included labor law issues within the sport, reviewing various commercial contracts, disciplinary cases and proceedings at the FIFA DRC and CAS.
